In 2018 Te Mana o te Awa, through the Te Rongoroa Scholarship supported Kahu Simon Jnr to attend the Outward Bound 21 day Classic Young Persons Course. Kahu had previously spent twelve months in Canada where he was an Outdoor Education mentor working with disadvantaged children. Kahu is interested in creating and effecting change at a ground roots level for rangatahi. Especially around mental health and whakamomori.
By developing new skills through the Outward Bound course this will allow Kahu to give back in a meaningful way. Kahu is a great believer in inspiring rangatahi and younger generations to step outside of their comfort zone and try new things.
The Outward Bound experience will empower him to give back to iwi and inspire through action. It also presents a unique opportunity to be in an environment with other young people to help Kahu gain a greater reach and deeper engagement of issues facing rangatahi. His current focus is to look at alternative ways to self-heal utilising the maramataka.
Kahu enjoys kapahaka and attends the Hui Aranga with his whānau. This year he gained first place in the Kaitātaki Tāne Junior Kapa Haka section. In 2019, he will be attending the Tira Hoe Waka and the Raukotahi Rangatahi Summit in July 2019 as well as the Hui Aranga.
